New Moon Ritual | A Simple Practice for Setting Intentions
The new moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle.
In the night sky it appears dark, not yet visible, holding its light in quiet reserve before the gradual illumination that follows over the coming days. It's a natural moment of stillness and possibility, a threshold between what has been and what might be.
Working with the new moon doesn't require elaborate preparation or a particular spiritual background. It's simply an invitation to pause, become intentional and plant the seeds of what you'd like to cultivate in the weeks ahead.
What You'll Need
A candle
Your journal or a piece of paper
A crystal you feel drawn to right now (trust your instincts here)
A quiet space where you won't be disturbed
Optional: something from nature, a leaf, a flower, a stone
Cleanse Your Space First
Before you begin, take a moment to cleanse your space. You might use smoke cleansing, passing the smoke of sage, cedar or palo santo around the room, or simply open a window and set a clear intention that this is a held, sacred space. You can read about Cleansing Crystals here.
If you have a dedicated altar, this is a beautiful time to work there.
The Ritual
1. Settle and arrive
Light your candle. Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths. With each exhale, allow yourself to arrive more fully in this moment. There's nowhere else you need to be right now.
2. Reflect on the cycle just passed
Before looking forward, take a moment to acknowledge where you've been. The new moon closes the previous cycle as it opens a new one.
You might journal on:
What did the last lunar cycle bring me?
What am I carrying that I'd like to leave here?
What have I learned?
There's no pressure to write at length. Even a few words can be enough.
3. Set your intentions
From that quiet, reflective place, turn your attention forward.
The new moon is a time for planting seeds rather than demanding immediate growth. Intentions set here don't need to be grand or dramatic. They can be tender, quiet, personal things.
You might journal on:
What would I like to call in over this coming cycle?
What quality would I like to embody more fully?
What is one small step I could take towards something that matters to me?
Write your intentions in the present tense if you can, as though they are already unfolding. Not "I want to feel more confident" but "I am becoming more confident with each day."
4. Work with your crystal
Hold your crystal and speak your intentions aloud, or simply hold them quietly in your mind. Ask your crystal to support you in holding these intentions through the coming cycle. Place it somewhere you'll see it regularly, on your altar, your bedside table, your desk, as a gentle daily reminder.
5. Close your ritual
Thank yourself for taking this time. Blow out your candle, or leave it burning safely if you'd prefer. Take a final breath and carry the quality of this stillness with you as you return to your day.
If you'd like a little support choosing crystals for your practice, we have a small collection of moon ritual kits in the shop, each one put together with intention for different themes including love, abundance and communication.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
The new moon energy is generally considered to extend for around three days either side of the exact date, so you don't need to time your ritual to the precise hour. Working within that window is absolutely enough.
If you miss a new moon entirely, that's fine too. These are invitations, not obligations.
And if your ritual looks nothing like this one, if it's five minutes with a candle and a single written intention, that's just as meaningful. The practice belongs to you.
Journal Prompts for the New Moon
If you'd like to go a little deeper, here are a few additional prompts to explore:
What does this season of my life feel like right now?
What would feel like a genuine act of self-kindness this month?
If I could focus on just one thing this lunar cycle, what would it be?
What am I ready to begin?
