How to work with a pendulum

Pendulums are a beloved and well known tool for divination, dowsing and reiki/chakra work.

The pendulum acts as receiver and transmitter and connects to your higher self to communicate wisdom to you. Here's a quick guide on how to get started on using yours and if you are looking for one, we have a beautiful range here.

Before you start any pendulum work, be sure to cleanse your pendulum, so it is ready to work for you and free of any other energy. There are many ways you can cleanse crystals, two of our favourites are selenite and smudging.

Once you have cleansed your pendulum, you are ready to get started.

First, you’ll want to program the pendulum.

You will need to know what a “no" looks like and what will a “yes” looks like for you.

Very often people choose a “no” to be a horizontal swing, and a “yes” to be a vertical swing, with a “maybe/unknown" being a circular motion. I personally prefer to ask my pendulum and build that relationship with her.

Just ask your pendulum:

What does yes look like?

Hold the pendulum still and wait for it to swing in a particular direction without influence from your hand. It might be a very obvious direction or subtle, both are fine. Now you have your yes, stop your pendulum with your hand or popping it on the table before doing the same for no and maybe/unknown.

What does no look like?

What does maybe look like?

Once you have your answers, you can ask a couple of test questions that you know the answers to and make sure that you and your pendulum are in agreement.

Once your pendulum is cleansed and programmed there are several ways you can use it.

Before every session with your pendulum, make sure to set your intention and call upon your higher self to answer the questions you ask it. Otherwise your subconscious mind might be the source of your answers.

Place yourself in a protective bubble of light where only energies for the highest good may enter.

One popular way to use a pendulum is to gain answers to simple questions. Asking a pendulum is simple, but you’ll have to make sure your question is in a yes or no format.

After the pendulum offers its wisdom, use your hand to stop the pendulum or tap it to the table to signal that you are finished with that question and that you are ready to move onto the next.

Using a pendulum is a great way to see if you chakra are out of balance or blocked, Starting at your crown chakra, hold your pendulum a few inches above the crown chakra and ask the question' Is my crown chakra in balance' or whatever words feel right to you. Wait for it to move by picking up on the subtle vibrations. When you have your answer, do the same for the next chakra and so on and until you have done all 7 ending with the root.

If any of your chakra's need rebalancing don't worry, knowledge is power. Kundalini yoga is one of the best ways I have found to do that, I hold online and in person classes if this speaks to you. You can find out more here.

Don’t forget to thank your pendulum for helping you discover the answers you needed and store it in a safe place when you aren’t using it. Cleanse it before each use.

Pendulums are wonderful tools to assist you to tune into your intuition but they should never be used as a replacement to trusting your own instincts and what you feel is right for you. Always go with your instincts first and foremost.
