Full Moon Ritual | A Practice for Reflection & Release
The full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle.
Where the new moon holds its light in quiet reserve, the full moon offers it fully, illuminating what has been growing since the cycle began. It's a moment of heightened energy, clarity and visibility, and often a time when things we've been carrying come naturally to the surface.
Working with the full moon is an invitation to pause, reflect and release. To acknowledge what has unfolded and consciously let go of what no longer serves you before the cycle begins to wane.
If you're new to working with the lunar cycle, you might enjoy reading the new moon ritual piece first.
What You'll Need
A candle
Your journal or a piece of paper
A crystal you feel drawn to right now [link: Working With Crystals Intuitively]
A quiet space where you won't be disturbed
Optional: a bowl of water, which carries beautiful symbolic energy for release work at the full moon
Optional: one of our moon ritual crystal kits
Cleanse Your Space First
Before you begin, take a moment to cleanse your space and yourself. The full moon is a particularly potent time for cleansing, both your physical space and your crystals.
If you have a dedicated altar, this is a wonderful time to work there, perhaps refreshing it with something that reflects the current season.
The Ritual
1. Settle and arrive
Light your candle. Hold your crystal in both hands, close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths. Allow yourself to arrive fully in this moment, releasing the busyness of the day with each exhale.
2. Reflect on what has unfolded
The full moon asks us to look honestly at what has grown since the new moon, and since the wider season we find ourselves in.
You might journal on:
What has unfolded or become clearer over this lunar cycle?
What am I most grateful for right now?
What have I learned about myself recently?
Where have I grown, even quietly, even slowly?
Take your time here. The full moon rewards honesty.
3. Identify what you're ready to release
This is the heart of full moon work. Not forcing yourself to let go of things you're not ready to release, but becoming honest about what you're carrying that is no longer serving you.
This might be a belief, a habit, a resentment, an expectation of yourself or someone else, a way of speaking to yourself, a fear you've outgrown.
You might journal on:
What am I ready to let go of?
What have I been holding onto that is keeping me stuck?
What would feel lighter to release?
If you'd like to work with the symbolic energy of release, you might write what you're letting go of on a piece of paper and safely burn it, or place it beneath your candle with the intention of releasing it as the flame burns. Trust whatever feels meaningful to you.
4. Work with your crystal
Hold your crystal and set a clear intention for the releasing work you've just done. You might ask it to support you in genuinely letting go, or in holding the clarity you've found during this ritual. Leave it on your windowsill overnight if you can, allowing it to cleanse and charge in the full moon's light.
5. Close your ritual
Acknowledge yourself for taking this time. Full moon work can stir things up and that takes courage. Blow out your candle, take a final grounding breath and carry the lightness of having named what you're releasing with you as you return to your evening.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Like the new moon, full moon energy extends for around three days either side of the exact date, so you don't need to time your ritual precisely.
Some full moons will feel more charged than others. Some months the releasing work will feel profound and some months it will be quiet and gentle. Both are valid.
And if you find that something you intended to release keeps returning, that's not a sign the ritual didn't work. It's simply a sign that there's more to explore. Some things release in layers, and that's perfectly natural.
Journal Prompts for the Full Moon
If you'd like to go a little deeper:
What does completion feel like for me right now?
Where in my life am I resisting what is?
What would I do differently if I truly trusted myself?
What is this full moon illuminating that I've been avoiding?
What am I ready to step into as this cycle wanes?
