Building An Altar | Creating Sacred Space in Everyday Life
An altar is simply a dedicated space that holds meaning for you.
It doesn't need to be elaborate. It doesn't need to look like anything you've seen on Pinterest. It doesn't require specialist knowledge or a particular spiritual background. An altar is just a surface, a shelf, a windowsill, a corner of a mantlepiece, where you gather objects that feel significant and return to them with intention.
I've had altars in various forms for years. They've changed with the seasons, with what I've needed, with what has felt alive and what has felt finished. That's the nature of them. They're not permanent installations, they're living, breathing reflections of where you are right now.
What Goes On An Altar
Anything that holds meaning for you. Crystals are a natural starting point, and you might choose yours intuitively, reaching for whatever you feel drawn to rather than following a prescribed list.
Beyond crystals you might include:
A candle. Seasonal finds, a fallen leaf, a feather, a pinecone, something that connects you to the natural world outside your window. A small dish of salt or water. Something personal, a photograph, a piece of jewellery, a written intention. Flowers, dried or fresh. An oracle card drawn for the current season or lunar phase.
There are no rules about what belongs and what doesn't. If it feels right, it belongs.
Placing Your Altar
Choose somewhere you'll actually see it and return to it. A beautiful altar hidden in a spare room serves nobody. A simple arrangement on your kitchen windowsill that catches your eye every morning is far more powerful.
You might cleanse the space before you begin, using smoke cleansing or simply setting a clear intention that this space is sacred and held.
Tending Your Altar
An altar benefits from attention. You don't need a formal practice around it, even pausing for a breath when you pass it, lighting the candle while the kettle boils, swapping out a crystal when you feel called to, these small moments of connection are enough.
Seasonal altars are something I particularly love. Changing your altar to reflect the Wheel of the Year, the shifting light, the colours and energies of each season, creates a beautiful rhythm of renewal throughout the year.
A Starting Point
If you're not sure where to begin, start with three things. One crystal you feel drawn to right now. One candle. One natural object from outside. Place them together with intention and see how it feels.
