Crystals for Beginners: How to Start Working with Crystals

Crystals for Beginners: How to Start Working with Crystals

If you’ve found your way here, you might be curious about crystals, but not quite sure where to begin.

You might have seen them before, felt drawn to them or even picked one up without really knowing why. Or perhaps life feels a little full at the moment, a little overwhelming and you’re looking for something that helps you feel more steady, more grounded, more like yourself again.

This is often how it starts.

Not with certainty, but with a feeling.

Why people are drawn to crystals

Crystals tend to come into people’s lives at times of change.

That might look like feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, navigating a life transition, going through a difficult or uncertain period, wanting to feel more connected, calm or clear, or simply feeling like there must be more than just getting through the day.

It’s not about having it all figured out.

It’s about noticing that something within you is asking for support.

And that support can look different for everyone.

Some people who work with crystals are busy mums holding a lot at home, people in demanding careers needing space to switch off, therapists and healers supporting others, those navigating illness or recovery, or simply people who want to feel more present and connected in their everyday life. For others there might be no logical reason but just feeling of being drawn to stones, nature and the feeling that there is something more to life that perhaps what we see.

There’s no “type” of person who works with crystals.

It’s far more normal, and far more human, than it’s often made out to be.

What crystals actually do

Crystals aren’t about fixing your life or changing everything overnight.

They’re a tool. Something you can hold onto, come back to and work with in a simple, grounded way.

In everyday life, people use crystals to create moments of calm when everything feels busy, feel more grounded and steady, support emotional balance, bring awareness to how they’re feeling, and reconnect with themselves.

Sometimes it’s as simple as having something physical to hold when your mind is busy.

Sometimes it’s about creating a pause in your day.

And sometimes, it’s even simpler than that.

You don’t actually need to “do” anything with crystals at all.

Some people simply enjoy having them in their space, noticing them, feeling drawn to them, or just loving how they look and feel. Having them around you in that way can absolutely be enough.

There’s no right or wrong way to work with crystals.

You can be as intentional or as relaxed with it as you like and trusting what feels natural to you is often where the real benefit lies.

How to choose your first crystals

One of the biggest blocks for people new to crystals is feeling like they need to choose the “right” crystal and worrying they might get it wrong.

And while understanding crystal properties can be helpful, it’s not the only way to choose.

If you already know what you need, whether that’s calm, grounding, clarity or support, then it can be useful to look for crystals that are known for those qualities. We have a full “Crystals by Properties” section on the website to make this easier, where you can explore crystals based on how you’re feeling and what you might need support with.

But if you’re not sure, and many people aren’t, then the most powerful thing you can do is trust your instincts.

Notice which crystals you feel drawn to...which colours, which shape.

That pull you feel towards a certain stone is often more important than anything you’ve read about it.

When I first started working with crystals, I was really drawn to Labradorite and actually quite repelled by green crystals. Now I still love Labradorite, but I also feel very connected to green stones. What you’re drawn to can shift over time, and that’s completely natural, in fact it's part of the fun of 'working' with them.

Sometimes our minds try to make sense of it all, but working with crystals isn’t always something that needs to be understood logically.

It’s more about energy and connection.

Your intuition, your own energy, interacting with the energy of the crystal.

For example, you might think you need grounding or protection, and naturally look towards darker stones. But if those don’t resonate and you find yourself drawn to softer colours like pinks or greens, that could be your body guiding you towards something deeper, such as emotional support or heart healing.

There’s no right or wrong in this.

If something doesn’t resonate, you don’t need to force it.

Trust what you’re naturally drawn to, rather than what a guide or someone else tells you.

Often what happens is you’ll start with one crystal, then feel drawn to another and over time you build a small collection that supports you in different ways.

You might find you reach for different crystals depending on your mood, your energy, or what’s going on in your life. That can change day to day, week to week, or over longer periods of time.

That’s part of the process.

You don’t need to have it all figured out at the beginning.

You just need to start by trusting what feels right for you.

If you’re not sure where to start

This is exactly why I created the Calm & Ground Crystal Kit.

It’s designed for those moments where everything feels a bit much, when you don’t want to overthink it, or when you feel overwhelmed by all of the choice.

It’s a simple, supportive starter kit, made up of crystals that many people naturally find themselves coming back to again and again, because they offer a really balanced range of support.

Within the kit you’ll find:

Amethyst, a calming, all round crystal that supports clarity, rest and a sense of space when your mind feels busy.

Rose Quartz, a gentle heart centred stone that supports emotional balance, softness and calm.

Smokey Quartz, a deeply grounding crystal that helps you feel more steady, supported and connected.

And Selenite, which is often used to clear and refresh energy, both in your space and with your other crystals. It’s a really simple way to begin understanding how to care for and work with your crystals over time.

Together, these create a well balanced foundation, supporting you across different areas rather than focusing on just one thing.

The kit also includes a range of shapes, so you can start to explore different ways of working with crystals.

There’s something you can hold, something you can keep nearby, something you can use more intentionally, and something that supports your space.

For example, a smooth worry stone that’s easy to carry with you, a small palm stone to hold when you need grounding, and a plate that can be used to rest or clear your crystals.

It also comes with a simple, easy to follow ritual and guidance to help you welcome your crystals in and begin working with them in a way that feels natural and not overwhelming.

So you’re not left wondering what to do with them, you have a gentle starting point to guide you.

You don’t need to know exactly what you’re doing. You can simply begin, and let your relationship with the crystals build over time.

You can explore it here:

Taking it further, at your own pace

I want to reassure you that you don’t need to rush into anything.

This isn’t about learning everything all at once or knowing everything there is to know about crystals.

In many ways, part of the joy of working with crystals is allowing it to unfold naturally over time.

When we rush to buy lots of crystals or try to understand everything quickly, it can actually become overwhelming, and sometimes even a little disappointing. It can start to feel like something we’re trying to get right, rather than something we’re experiencing.

The real value tends to come from slowing down.

Working with a small number of crystals, noticing how you feel with them, paying attention to what you’re drawn to next, and allowing that relationship to build in a way that feels natural to you.

It becomes less about searching for a quick fix, and more about learning to listen to yourself.

If you do feel ready to go a little deeper over time, there are gentle ways to support that.

The Calm & Ground Crystal Kit is designed as a simple starting point, and alongside that, the “A Year in Crystals” guide can be a really supportive companion.

It’s a downloadable PDF that you can work through in your own time, guiding you gently through the year, month by month. It’s not just about learning different crystals, but about noticing your own energy, what’s shifting in your life, and building a deeper connection to your intuition in a way that feels grounded and manageable.

If you choose to work with physical crystals, you’ll also receive a free invite to our monthly “Working with Crystals” workshop when you make a purchase. These sessions are a chance to deepen your understanding, ask questions, and explore working with your crystals in a really simple and supportive way.

If you’d prefer to join without purchasing, you can also book onto a workshop for £11.11.

Our Crystal Essentials collection also offers a way to explore different crystals at your own pace, and the Crystal of the Month Subscription opens a few times a year for those who feel ready for a more guided, ongoing journey.

But for now, beginning is enough.

A final thought

You don’t need to be an expert to work with crystals.

You don’t need to understand everything.

You just need to start noticing how you feel, and allow yourself small moments to come back to that.

That’s where the real value is.

Above all, trust your intuition. Enjoy the process, take it at your own pace, and if you can, allow it to feel light and even a little bit enjoyable.

Everyone starts somewhere. You can’t get this wrong.

In many ways, it’s the beginning of a really beautiful relationship.

And if you ever feel unsure, just know we’re here to support you.
