Pietersite was first described in Namibia in 1962 and is a relatively rare gemstone prized for its dramatic swirling appearance. Its fibrous structure can create chatoyancy, where bands of colour and light appear to shift as the stone moves, creating the storm-like effect that has given Pietersite its name, the Tempest Stone. Namibian Pietersite is particularly known for its combinations of deep blue, gold, brown and rust tones.
