Moldavite is a rare natural impact glass formed around 15 million years ago following a meteorite impact in what is now southern Germany, with genuine Moldavite occurring within a limited strewn field centred predominantly in the Czech Republic. Traditionally associated with profound transformation, spiritual awakening and rapid personal growth, it is particularly sought after by those feeling ready for significant change.

Why I Chose This Crystal

This is a really beautiful example of Moldavite. At 7g it's a lovely chunky piece, with really interesting natural texture and markings across the surface.

I particularly love the depth of colour. It looks incredibly dark until the light passes through it and that beautiful olive green suddenly appears. It's exactly the sort of Moldavite I look for when choosing larger pieces.

What is Moldavite?

Moldavite is a rare natural glass formed approximately 15 million years ago following the impact that created the Ries crater in what is now southern Germany. Material ejected during the impact cooled as it travelled through the atmosphere before falling predominantly across areas of what is now the Czech Republic.

Over millions of years, natural weathering and erosion created the distinctive sculpted surfaces seen on genuine Moldavite today. Each piece is completely individual, with variations in colour, transparency, shape and surface texture depending partly on where and how it formed and was subsequently deposited.

Because genuine Moldavite comes from a limited geographical area and no new material is being created, good natural specimens have become increasingly collectable.

This is a substantial 7g natural Moldavite specimen with beautiful deep olive-green colouring and wonderfully preserved natural surface texture.

Viewed normally, much of the piece appears very dark green, but when held towards the light its translucency becomes visible and the colour transforms into a much brighter olive green.

The surface carries beautiful natural sculpting, with pits, grooves, ridges and irregular formations created through the Moldavite's extraordinary geological history and millions of years of natural weathering.

At approximately 28.4mm × 20.8mm, this is a lovely chunky specimen rather than one of the very thin, lightweight pieces sometimes seen at similar dimensions.

How to Work With This Crystal

Moldavite has acquired a reputation for being an incredibly intense crystal, but you don't need to approach it expecting an overwhelming experience.

Start by holding it for a short meditation and simply notice your response. Some people report experiencing warmth, tingling or heightened awareness while others experience nothing physically at all. Neither response determines whether you are "connecting" with the crystal.

You might also use Moldavite alongside journalling, asking yourself what feels ready to change and what you may have been avoiding because staying where you are feels more familiar.

If you find its energy intense, work with it for shorter periods or pair it with a grounding crystal such as Smokey Quartz.
