Boji Stones are unusual naturally formed stones traditionally worked with in pairs for grounding, balancing and bringing the energetic system back into alignment. Their dark, earthy appearance and wonderfully irregular formations are completely natural, with each stone differing in shape, texture and size. Traditionally, smoother stones are described as having feminine energy while more textured or protruding stones are associated with masculine energy, with the pair worked with together to create balance.

Why I Chose This Crystal

I love Boji Stones because in many ways they are so unassuming. They don't look like a fancy crystal and I think that is part of what makes them so special. They have this wonderfully earthy, ancient feel to them and I love the tradition of working with them as a pair, bringing together masculine and feminine energies rather than focusing on one in isolation.

For me, they are very much about balance and coming back to centre. I particularly love working with crystals like this when life feels busy or you feel pulled in different directions. There is something beautifully simple about holding one in each hand, grounding yourself and allowing everything to settle.

What are Boji Stones and where do they come from?

Boji Stones are unusual natural iron-rich concretions associated with the ancient chalk beds of Kansas in the United States. Rather than being a single mineral or conventional crystal species, they formed naturally within sediment over millions of years and contain iron-rich minerals including pyrite and marcasite.

Their wonderfully irregular shapes and surfaces are completely natural. Some are relatively smooth and rounded while others are much more textured, knobbly or crystalline, which is why no two Boji Stones will ever look exactly alike.

The name Boji Stone comes from the modern history surrounding these unusual formations rather than being their geological mineral name. They are also sometimes known as Kansas Pop Rocks. Their distinctive appearance may be quite understated compared with colourful or highly polished crystals, but that natural, earthy quality is very much part of what makes them so fascinating.

Why are Boji Stones worked with in pairs?

Within crystal healing traditions, Boji Stones are most commonly worked with as a pair. Smoother stones are traditionally associated with feminine, receptive energy while rougher and more textured stones are associated with masculine, active energy.

Because of their natural iron-rich composition, I recommend keeping your Boji Stones dry rather than cleansing them in water.

This variation is an intrinsic part of these stones and one of the things I love about them. They have not been cut and polished to create matching shapes and your pair should not be expected to look identical to one another.

How to Work With This Crystal

Begin by sitting quietly with one Boji Stone in each hand. Rather than trying to make anything happen, simply notice how you feel holding the pair and allow yourself to settle.

They can be particularly lovely to work with at the beginning or end of meditation, after energy work or whenever you feel you need to come back into your body and reconnect with the present moment.

You could also use them alongside a grounding practice, placing both feet firmly on the floor and taking several slow breaths while holding one stone in each hand.
