How Kundalini Yoga Transformed My Menopause Journey: From HRT and Surgery to Balance and Emotional Resilience

Menopause and the peri-menopausal journey can feel like an overwhelming and confusing time. For me, it’s been a decade-long struggle, made worse by a diagnosis of PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) that went undiagnosed for 10 years. Throughout that time, doctors repeatedly prescribed antidepressants, but I always knew there had to be another way. Eventually, I paid privately to see a consultant and was put on a high dose of HRT. Even then, I didn’t find the relief I desperately needed. I was told my only remaining option was a full hysterectomy.

But something deep within me kept saying that surgery wasn’t the answer. That’s when I turned to alternative therapies, and most importantly, committed fully to Kundalini Yoga. It has completely transformed my life – not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

I’ve now come off HRT and taken myself off the waiting list for surgery. I feel like a different person – more resilient, grounded, and at peace within myself. I want to share how Kundalini Yoga has supported me on this journey because I know how isolating and disheartening it can feel when your body and mind seem to be working against you.

Kundalini Yoga and Menopause

Kundalini Yoga is a beautiful, powerful practice that combines movement, breathwork, chanting, and meditation to awaken and balance your energy. It’s so much more than just physical exercise – it’s about creating harmony between your body, mind, and spirit. This has been my anchor through the ups and downs of peri-menopause.

How Kundalini Yoga Has Helped Me

  • Hormonal Balance: Specific postures and breath techniques in Kundalini Yoga have helped me manage the intense hormonal fluctuations I was experiencing. Regular practice supports the endocrine system, helping to stabilise hormone levels naturally.

  • Stress Relief: One of the hardest parts of peri-menopause was the emotional overload – feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and just not like myself. Kundalini’s breathing techniques and meditations have grounded me in moments of chaos, calming my nervous system and allowing me to breathe through difficult emotions.

  • Emotional Resilience: Before practising Kundalini, I felt like I was constantly fighting my emotions. Now, I feel more accepting and at peace, even on the harder days. The chanting and mantra work help me feel connected to something deeper and more supportive.

  • Improved Sleep: I used to lie awake for hours, exhausted but wired. Kundalini practices, especially guided meditations and Yoga Nidra, have been a lifeline, helping me find restful, restorative sleep.

  • Physical Strength and Pelvic Health: Menopause can weaken pelvic floor muscles, leading to issues like incontinence. Kundalini Yoga strengthens these muscles gently and effectively, helping me feel more confident and in control of my body.

  • Spiritual Connection: This practice has given me a sense of purpose and connection beyond just the physical symptoms. I feel more connected to myself, to nature, and to something bigger than me – and that has been invaluable during this transition.

Kundalini Yoga isn’t just a practice – it’s become my sanctuary, my space to come home to myself, and the most powerful tool I’ve found to support my well-being. I truly believe it can help you too.
